Clothes for Children

This project seeks to provide warm winter clothing to underprivileged children who stand in need of it.  Altogether, 730 school children were identified as being in urgent need.

Thanks to the generosity of the following donors it was possible to provide for 340 of the most needy of these.  Midge & Betty Mitchell (Texas USA), Barbara & Jerry Jacobs (Texas USA), Debby Everrit-Murray (USA), Tore & Birget Haugerud (Norway), Dr Ethel Barrow (UK/RSA) and Ackermans (Oudtshoorn RSA).

Thanks are also due to the following members of the Uniondale community who gave of their time to implement the project on the ground.  Rev.Steven Anthony, Councillor Daphne Loff, Johanna Hodgson, Tharina Lamprecht, Anthony Prins, Dave Hodgson, the school principals of Avontuur, Haarlem, Dirk Boshoff, De Hoop, Rooirivier, Kommandantsdrift and Uniondale, Mr.Piet Swart and Sister Sharon Arends.

Each parcel of clothes contained a warm top, long pants, socks and shoes and was received with joy by each lucky child.  This project is ongoing, however, as even last winter's beneficiaries had only the one set of winter clothing and will surely wear it out before next winter.  Other long-term projects are in hand to try and address the causes of poverty but we rely on the generosity of our sponsors to bridge the gap.

Please help a child.  You'll be glad you did!

Special News

Recently Uniep heard about a 4 month old baby who was hospitalised as a result of malnutrition and neglect by the parents. The child was released from hospital in the care of foster parents where she died later, still as a result of earlier neglect.

Uniep made a contribution towards the funeral and as a result of this incident decided to become involved in the foster care of children.

There are 153 foster children in the Uniondale / Haarlem DMA area between the ages of 0 to 18 years. Although foster parents receive a limited allowance from the state it is not nearly enough.

Accordingly Uniep decided to embark on an extension of the Clothing Project where donations from individuals and companies are sought to provide these children with clothes. Donations can either be in cash or in the form of no longer needed clothes and toys.

Please contact us should you wish to contribute to this worthwhile project.
